The philosophy of the Hendricken athletic program is rooted in the mission of the school. Athletics are an important component in the development of the total person: heart, mind, soul and body. Athletics are a tool used to develop each member of athletic community and bring him into a stronger relationship with our God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Bishop Hendricken offers a comprehensive and excellent athletic program with a total of forty teams in fourteen league and two club sports.  The school is a member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and is the only school in the league to field teams in all fourteen league sports at the highest level of competition offered by the league. In its pursuit of excellence, Hendricken has amassed a legendary record of success in athletics, winning over 140 Rhode Island state championships in all fourteen league sports over the past thirty-two years.

The school also offers superior athletic facilities including:

  • two full gymnasiums
  • a state-of-the-art weight training facility
  • two baseball fields
  • five tennis courts
  • an all weather track and field facility
  • Rhode Island’s first high school artificial turf game field which was installed in 2006

Hawks drub Portsmouth, will play for title

For the 10th time in the last 12th years, the freshmen football Hawks will play in the freshmen state championship game after their 33-16 victory over the Portsmouth Patriots. Lead by Power “Surge” Kanga’s three touchdowns on runs of 55, 9, and 25 yards, the freshmen jumped out to a 26-0 halftime lead. Quarterback John “Tip Top” Toppa added a touchdown on a 51-yard run and Terrence “TG” Gibbs ran 35 yards for another score. Kanga kicked three extra points. The freshmen will play Barrington next Saturday at 3:00 at Cranston Stadium.
 
 

Hawks blast Barrington for state championship

It was a three-peat for the freshmen football Hawks as they won their third consecutive state championship with a 36-18 victory over the Barrington Eagles. This marks the seventh time in the last 11 years that the freshmen have won the state title. After falling behind 6-0, the Hawks claimed the lead on a three yard run by Power “Surge” Kanga. Kanga added the two point conversion. Lee “Holy” Moses’ 59-yard punt return was the second score. John “Tip Top” Toppa passed to Matt “All the Time” Duffie for the two point conversion. Toppa’s thirteen-yard run and Devine Jehvine Quamweay conversion gave the Hawks a 24-12 halftime lead. Kanga scored again on a three yard run the after an acrobatic catch by Matt Duffie in the third quarter. Toppa passed 35 yards to Lee Moses for the final score. The Hawks defense was outstanding in the second half. The vaunted Double Quicks offense ran out the final quarter behind the running of Matt Colucci, James “The Human Bowling Ball” Bowen, and Nick “The Quick” Mercurio. At the end of the season, the young Hawks would like to thank their classmates, faculty, staff and administration for their support. Saturday was a great day for football and a great way to end the season.
