Sports Update - May 20
Date: 05/20/2013

Several of Bishop Hendricken's spring sports teams hit the halfway point of their seasons in championship contention. Here's a brief rundown of each squad, with some highlights:

Rugby: The Hawks' rugby team remains undefeated on the season, with the playoffs in Massachusetts two weeks away. The team's accomplishments earned it the first national ranking in program history. Hendricken checks in at No. 29 in rugbymag.com's Boys HS Club rankings. The Hawks visit St. John's Prep in a semifinal Tuesday afternoon. Hendricken defeated Prep in the regular season, its first-ever victory in the series.

Golf: Hendricken captured a division championship with a 14-0 regular-season record. Justin Matrone, '14, Brandon Macedo, '13, Claudio Soukamneuth, '16, and Duncan Marshall, '14, were the Hawks' regular scores. Macedo and Marshall each posted scoring averages of 38; Soukamneuth and Matrone each checked in with averages of 40. The state tournament is May 27 & 28 at Cranston Country Club.

Outdoor Track & Field: The Hawks followed up victories at the Schomp Invitational and the Central Division meet with a Class A championship Saturday at Cumberland. The green and gold's 115 points were enough to beat out runner-up East Providence, which had 93.

Nick DeCiantis led Hendricken with an individual victory in the discus, and two relay teams also won events. The 4-x-100 team (Marco DelVecchio, '13; John Cute, '14; Power Kanga, '15; Lee Moses, '15) finished first in a season-best 43.2 seconds. Another 10-point victory came from the 4-x-400 team of Matt Lombardi, '13; Andrew Geremia, '15; Ian MacLeod, '14; and Cameron Ricci, '13, who ran 3:32.2.

The Hawks will compete in the Hendricken Invitational on Saturday before heading to the Rhode Island State Meet on June 1 at Brown University.

Baseball: The Hawks moved to 15-0 against Rhode Island teams after sweeping LaSalle, North Providence and St. Raphael's last week at Prpin Field. Pitching and defense continue to carry the green and gold, led by Mike King, '13, who has allowed one earned run total in six outings this season. As a team, the Hawks have posted five shutouts and allowed 1.1 runs per game against in-state competition.

Lacrosse: The 6-4 Hawks completed the regular season with consecutive road victories over Barrington and North Kingstown. Conor Garrhay, '14, has emerged as Hendricken's primary offensive force with 29 goals in his first nine games. The Hawks will be seeded second or third in the Divsion I playoffs, which are scheduled to start next week.

Volleyball: The Hawks sit at 8-4 after completing a regular-season sweep of LaSalle. They host Mount St. Charles and visit East Providence next week in matches that should determine the Division I-North champion.

Unified Basketball: Hendricken's run toward a division championship ended in the semifinals, when Portsmouth sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer to beat the Hawks 21-20. Congratulations to graduating seniors Kevin Breede, Nick Caprio and Sal Maggiacomo on an oustanding season.
