The Music program at Bishop Hendricken offers students unparalleled artistic opportunities in both instrumental and vocal performance.

Instrumental Music

The Instrumental Music program includes exceptional performance offerings for young musicians, along with academic courses in theory, history, and technology for both musicians and non-musicians. Young instrumentalists perform, compete, and enjoy playing music within the variety of outstanding ensembles offered throughout the year.

Mr. Sean Donnelly ’07, Band Director

Both the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble meet as part of the morning Arts Academy, while the Academy Jazz Band and Jazz Techniques Ensemble meet as part of the afternoon Arts Academy. The Hawk Marching Band is an extra-curricular, co-educational group (female students from other schools may participate) that performs for football games and competes regionally. Many of the members continue throughout the year as part of our competition Percussion Ensemble, or in the Basketball Pep Band.

The String Ensemble is an extra-curricular group that includes talented players both from Hendricken and other local schools. Hendricken also offers an in-house program with qualified teachers providing on-on-one instruction, as well as a beginner program in a group setting. Ensembles perform and compete throughout the country in events such as the RIMEA Musical Festival, the Berkeley Music Festival, NESBA events, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City, and at the Lincoln Center.

The Vocal Program

Mrs. Mary Jo Gambardella, Choir Director

The Vocal program at Bishop Hendricken provides students with exceptional opportunities to develop talent and vocal ability. Our young men have opportunities to participate in several vocal courses and ensembles, including our Arts Academy Chorus class.

Additionally, the program offers a number of choral ensembles, including the Young Men’s Chorus, Select Chorus, and the Hawkafellas, our new a cappella group. All choral ensembles meet as extracurricular groups, and involve approximately 60 talented singers from the school community. Our choruses have become a vital part of our school community, actively participating in all liturgies, as well as various concerts in-house and throughout the state of Rhode Island.

The chorus participates in many festivals and competitions throughout the year, taking home numerous awards such as “Grand Champion” and “Best Soloist.” Members of our Young Men’s Chorus have also traveled on Pilgrimages to Ireland in 2008, Italy in 2010, where they performed for Pope Benedict; and Spain and Portugal in 2012.
