“The best” included a Hendricken education. He’d have to commute from Newport which meant early mornings and late nights all while factoring in playing sports and time for homework, not to mention paying tuition. But, her love for her son and wanting the best for him far outweighed the obstacles. Felicia and Duwuan Edwards ’19 were willing to make the sacrifices.
Thankfully there were others willing to make sacrifices too. Tom Harkins ’76, the President of Hendricken’s Board of Directors, lives and works in New Hampshire. Tom is also the high jump coach for Hendricken’s track team, so he commutes two hours to be there for our Hawks each day. Yes, you read that right, two hours from New Hampshire. He is also one of our top donors who will do whatever it takes to give students like Duwuan a chance.
Thanks to people like Tom, Duwuan received not only the tuition assistance he needed to make a Hendricken education affordable, but something even more valuable. Upon his recent graduation, Duwuan described his experience this way: “My four years at Hendricken have put me on a path to success. I won’t forget the brotherly bond I have formed with my classmates and teammates. I especially won’t forget how much the faculty and staff have done for me. My coaches, Harkins, Lourenco and Manning, have become vital father figures in my life and I believe that bonds like these cannot easily be found at places other than Hendricken. For this, I am so thankful.”
Duwuan received a scholarship and signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his athletic career at the University of Rhode Island where he will major in Education in the fall. Duwuan is on the path to success.
That’s what Tom Harkins ’76 did to make a difference in the life of a Hawk. Help us get over the finish line! We are currently at $577,018… 96.2% of our goal. Please join us and show you care. There are 3 days left in this school year to show your support.
