The Music program at Bishop Hendricken offers students unparalleled artistic opportunities in both instrumental and vocal performance.

Instrumental Music

The Instrumental Music program includes exceptional performance offerings for young musicians, along with academic courses in theory, history, and technology for both musicians and non-musicians. Young instrumentalists perform, compete, and enjoy playing music within the variety of outstanding ensembles offered throughout the year.

Mr. Sean Donnelly ’07, Band Director

Both the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble meet as part of the morning Arts Academy, while the Academy Jazz Band and Jazz Techniques Ensemble meet as part of the afternoon Arts Academy. The Hawk Marching Band is an extra-curricular, co-educational group (female students from other schools may participate) that performs for football games and competes regionally. Many of the members continue throughout the year as part of our competition Percussion Ensemble, or in the Basketball Pep Band.

The String Ensemble is an extra-curricular group that includes talented players both from Hendricken and other local schools. Hendricken also offers an in-house program with qualified teachers providing on-on-one instruction, as well as a beginner program in a group setting. Ensembles perform and compete throughout the country in events such as the RIMEA Musical Festival, the Berkeley Music Festival, NESBA events, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City, and at the Lincoln Center.

The Vocal Program

Mrs. Mary Jo Gambardella, Choir Director

The Vocal program at Bishop Hendricken provides students with exceptional opportunities to develop talent and ability. Our young men have opportunities to participate in two vocal music opportunities: the Arts Academy Chorus class, an honors-level course offered over the course of 4 years; and the Young Men’s Chorus, an extracurricular ensemble that meets Mondays & Wednesdays from 2:45pm-3:45pm.

The Arts Academy Chorus and Young Men’s Chorus combine for performances and involve more than 50 talented young men. Both choirs have become a vital part of our school community, performing two concerts each year, as well as actively participating in all school liturgies, open houses, and fundraisers.

Outside of school, the chorus has sang the national anthem at multiple sporting events, including Red Sox games at Fenway Park, and Providence Bruins games. The chorus also attends many festivals and regional competitions, earning ratings of “Excellent” and “Superior.” To date, the program hosts the Young Men’s Choral Festival with the Providence Singers and Rhode Island College; and regularly attends the Providence College High School Festival, Rhode Island Music Educator’s Festival, and the Music in the Parks Festival.

The chorus is also well-traveled, making trips to perform in Universal Orlando Resort (2003), New York City (2005), Ireland (2008), Italy (2010) where they sang for Pope Benedict, Spain & Portugal (2012), Hawaii (2014), Italy (2016) where they sang at the Chair of St. Peter in the Basilica, and Ireland (2018).
