Academic Decathlon wins its 8th consecutive state competition

Hendricken’s 9-man team captures the 2018 state championship

WARWICK, RI – Bishop Hendricken’s Academic Decathlon team won its eighth consecutive RI State Competition on Sunday at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick. As a team, the Hawks took home 58 medals, the most ever by the school, including 22 gold, 15 silver, and 21 bronze.

The Academic Decathlon is a state-wide competition involving A/B/C level students who compete against each other in 10 disciplines, including: essay, speech, interview, math, English, science, economics, social studies, fine arts, and a super quiz whose topic varies from year to year.

Hendricken saw stellar individual performances from each team member. The squad’s top scorers were Steven Huang (Honors), Mitchell Boyer (Scholastic), and Jaidan Idarrago Cano (Varsity), who earned medals in all 10 events. Mitchell Boyer and Ryan Murphy each received 8 medals, Steven Huang and Dylan Temel garnered 7 medals apiece, Alden Pratt and Tim Dziekan both took home 6, Harris Gadzer earned 5, and Stephen Marandola earned 1.

Hendricken also won the evening’s super quiz, and Sr. Carol Anne Murray, the team’s moderator, was named Coach of the Year. With the win, the team has punched its ticket to the 2018 U.S. Academic Decathlon Nationals in Frisco, Texas from April 19-21. Hendricken placed 1st in Division II at the 2017 Nationals.
