“Paramount” stuns at first out-of-region competition

Rhode Island’s only competitive show choir sweeps Virginia festival

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (February 16, 2019) – The Arts at Bishop Hendricken’s competitive show choir, “Paramount,” had quite the impressive showing at the Menchville High School Clash of Choirs on Saturday.

In its third competition of the 2018-2019 season, and the group’s first ever out-of-region festival, “Paramount” swept all major awards in the small mixed group division of the Newport News festival, including Grand Champion of the Small Division, Champion of the Small Mixed Division, Best Vocal Quality, Best Choreography, Best Show Design, and Best Costumes.

Brad Hutchison ’20 and Marissa Birmingham both earned Judge’s Showmanship Awards for their individual performances.

At the beginning of February, the group swept all major awards in the small mixed group division of the Central Massachusetts Show Choir Festival in Dudley, Massachusetts. “Paramount” earned the Grand Champion title, Best Vocals, Best Choreography, Best Duets, an Outstanding Performance Award (Sean Ryan ’21), and Best Female Soloist (Elizabeth Barrett).

The group’s 2018-2019 production of “Me and My Shadow” features a five-song set, including “Shadows of the Night,” “Together Forever,” and “Take My Hand,” among others. The show’s concept and design has garnered praise from several adjudicators from across the nation.

The group is comprised of over 50 student performers, musicians, and technicians. The choir is directed by Mr. Richard Sylvia, Director of Arts. “Paramount” is choreographed by Ms. Brooke Smolder, Mr. Chantz Gould, and Mr. David Weeks. Mr. Sean Donnelly ’07 serves as the group’s Pit Band Conductor, Mrs. Vicki Niro is the Costumer, and Mr. Christian Kabbas ’14 is the Technical Director.

“Paramount” will round out its season with competitions in Madison, Connecticut; Andover, Massachusetts; and Waltham, Massachusetts.
